Emergency eye care
Under NHS prescribing legislation, we at Mearns Opticians can independently prescribe licensed eye-related medicines direct to patients without them having to visit their GP, or hospital eye service. Our resident Optometrist is an approved Independent Prescriber (IP), and fully qualified to prescribe under the NHS, giving our patients the full care they need for eye-related issues.
It can very worrying to wake up with an abnormal looking eye, whether it be an painless/painful red eye, a sticky red eye, reduced vision in one or both eyes, or perhaps an increase in headaches. These symptoms should be a warning sign to seek a professional assessment ASAP. You would be amazed at the the amount of patients that have visited the practice, after suffering for weeks with acute common eye conditions that could have been easily treated with one visit to our practice.
Any acute condition that cannot be treated and managed in our practice will be referred directly to the local Hospital Eye Service for treatment under the appropriate timescale guidelines.
Using shared health service guidelines under our emergency care service, we will always inform our patients GPs of any medication prescribed and management plan administered.
